Iran's 2026 Crackdown on Dissent

Amnesty International and Reporters Without Borders have documented over 200 executions in Iran in the first quarter of 2026 alone, the highest quarterly figure in over a decade.

The targets

The crackdown is concentrated on three groups:

Women's rights activists continuing the movement that began with the 2022 death of Mahsa Amini in custody.
Ethnic minority protesters, particularly Kurds and Baluchis, who have faced disproportionate use of capital punishment.
Independent journalists documenting any of the above; press freedom has fallen further on the RSF index.

Patterns

Executions are increasingly carried out without prior public notice, often within days of the verdict. International appeals and even intergovernmental representations have had limited effect.

What's verifiable

Names and case-file numbers of executed individuals are tracked by Iran Human Rights and HRANA, two independent monitors operating from outside the country.
Satellite imagery has confirmed expansion of detention facilities in Tehran, Mashhad, and Karaj.
